I used to do what you described all the time in the Darktide (full PvP) serer of Asheron's Call. I'd also take it one step futher; if someone dropped loot, particularly if it was useless to me but valuable to them, there was a special crystal in-game that you could toss their loot into. The loot would sit there, for an hour, just out of their reach before disappearing forever. A special form of torture.
Why do it?
Sure, it ignores any game-theory conception of mutual benefit. But that's not the point.
The point is, it's fun.
Why is it fun?
The reaction from others. If someone just stood there unmoving, AFK, while I camped them, I'd stop camping them before too long.
MMOs are about feelings of dominance and, conversely, feelings of *being* dominated.
I think that's where we disagree. i don't find anything fun about ganking people in WOW, i never spend any time specifically ganking. Sure, I'll attack the random dude in STV if they're on my way to somewhere, especially if I have been ganked 10 times that night (like last night.)
The article was about trying to figure out the motivations for people who DO like that kind of activity in WOW. You being one of those people, of course it's hard to explain or understand. As you said, it's just fun to you. For me, it's not. And the article was about trying to figure out the differences between players like you and players like me.
